“Do something that will put a smile in your face, something that will satisfy your soul. Until unless you are not doing anyone wrong, believe on yourself and give your best shot.”
Binay Gurung has been around in the Nepali tattoo industry for more than seven years. The path towards this started already in his childhood, when he was drawing in his free time. But becoming a tattoo artist was not an option back then: Like most of the children in Nepal, he was dreaming about careers as a doctor, a pilot or even an engineer instead. Tattooing became more of a getaway from a “daily routine boring life” as Binay explains it himself. At some point though, living in a country with a long history in arts and culture, this world did not let him go again. And it got better every day!
“There is never an end to learning, never an end to what level you can get. It is limitless. I believe one life is not enough.”
Within all those years, Binay has experienced Ups and Downs, but generally sticks to the rule of “research and develop“. In his perception, those experiences have just been a small step of a long way to go. Within this small step, Binay already owns for six years the studio Ink’s Inc. in the touristy hustle and bustle of Thamel in Kathmandu.
As there is no end of gaining knowledge for him, Binay is looking forward to meet more artists at Nepal Inked and learn something from this exchange. Right now, he is not focusing on a specific style though: Lately, he prefers experimenting with neo-traditional works and realism, but, according to his philosophy, there is always more to learn to find one’s own right way: “Until then, I will enjoy any challenges brought before me.”
“No matter what you do, always do it with your full heart, always give your best shot. I tell my friends, “If you are a doctor, be the best doctor anyone can be and even if you are a thief, be the best thief anyone can be”. It might sound crazy, but these are the rules I always tried to follow. I would be following the same rule no matter what profession I would be doing. Even if I was a drug dealer, I would try to be the best I could be, you know (laughs). Maybe a bad example but it is true, I would always try to enjoy, what I do and push myself more every day.“
