Stemming from the school of Japanese traditional tattooing, Nepali and Indian traditional tattooing have excelled in the recent years due to the visionary approach of certain remarkable tattoo artists from our part of the world. Over the course of this article, we will show you tattoos by some of the most respected tattoo artists of India and Nepal; artists who have formed their own original voices in tattooing through their complex and powerful, persuasive tattoo art that narrate modern tales through traditional motifs.

Traditional tattooing with modern contexts is at a very interesting phase in South Asia, as people are opening up increasingly to the idea of getting big tattoos and no matter what you say, few styles can look as powerful, and characterful as traditional tattooing styles.

For starters, check out this torso tattoo by the pioneer of tattooing in Nepal, Mohan Gurung

One of my personal favourites in this scene is Eek Glass Pani, aka Bimal Rai. Tattooing for less than a decade even, Bimal is probably a tattoo genius. He at times works alongside John Ma as #EekMa, a collaborative duo who create mouth-watering tattoo art, man. Trippy stuff!

The other half of #EekMa, John Ma is equally explosive, if not more, and is regarded as one of the finest of South Asia across the table. GettingΒ  a tattoo from John, some say, is a life-changing experience, and we can’t agree more. Watching John and Bimal tattoo is unlike any art experience you will ever come across.

This rad ass start to a full torso by John and Serjiu Arnautu is OOMPH!

In India, Yogesh C. Waghmare is creating unforeseen branches of tattooing in Indian traditional styles that are not just flat mythology epics, but filled with modernity and characteristics of a postmodern consciousness.

This badass by Niloy is a personal favourite, though.

Niloy Das is an exceptionally talented tattoo artist from Kolkata that every tattoo lover should know about. He is fast, versatile, and incredibly hard working. Here’s an extension to the previous tattoo he completed a season back at Goa Tattoo Festival.

This list though would be nowhere close to complete without the showing you the neo-traditional genius of Binay Gurung of Inks Inc. Tattoo, Kathmandu. Binay is prolific to say the least, and comes up with these expansive imageries on skin that is not purely traditional. It is unique. See for yourself…

The following tattoo was an impromptu collaboration between Binay and John Ma. Trust me, it felt like witnessing performance art.

And this…

Then, come let’s show you some power lining and scratchy madness by Raja, aka Mettleink

There is no way I will forget including Michen Lepcha of Mik Ink, Sikkim here. He does some truly traditional tibetan tattoo imagery, but his palette is out of the ordinary.

And then, there’s the magic of Palzor Lepcha. Years ahead of the game…
